SIGIRIYA · POLONNARUWA · ELLA
Cultural Triangle
2,500 years of kingdoms, temples and tea.
- Duration
- 11 Days
- Party
- PRIVATE · 2–6
- From
- US$4,260 per person
What it is built around
- Polonnaruwa by bicycle in the early morning, before the heat
- The Sigiriya frescoes with an archaeologist rather than a guidebook
- A private evening ceremony at a working temple in Kandy
- The Kandy to Ella train through the tea country, in a reserved seat
- Two nights on a tea estate, including the factory at full run
The shape of it.
An outline rather than a schedule. The days move around you once we know your flights, and nothing here is fixed.
Days 1–2
Negombo and the road north
A first night near the coast to reset, then north into the dry zone where the old capitals are.
Days 3–5
Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa
Three days across two ancient cities, on foot and by bicycle, with an archaeologist for the parts that are easy to walk past.
Days 6–7
Sigiriya
The rock itself, the frescoes, and the far quieter Pidurangala opposite it for the view back.
Days 8–9
Kandy
The temple, the lake and an evening ceremony arranged privately, away from the visiting hours.
Days 10–11
Tea country, then home
The mountain railway to Ella, a night on the estate, and a driver waiting to take you back down.
What is included
- Private vehicle and driver-guide throughout
- A specialist archaeologist for the three ancient-city days
- All site entry, which is substantial in the Triangle
- Ten nights across heritage properties and estate bungalows
- Reserved observation-car seats on the hill-country train
Best for
People who read the plaque, and who want someone with them who knows what it leaves out.
Probably not for
A first trip built around beaches. There is coastline at either end, but the middle of this is inland and hot.
