About us

A small studio, on the island itself.

Remarkable Ceylon is based in Colombo and plans private journeys through Sri Lanka, with part of the team in Abu Dhabi for travellers in the Gulf. Small enough that you will know who is looking after you.

Most Sri Lanka itineraries are the same itinerary.

There is a circuit. Airport, Sigiriya, Kandy, a train, a beach, home. It exists because it works, and because it is easy to sell twice. Most visitors do a version of it, and most of them enjoy it.

It is also not the island we live on. The circuit misses Wilpattu because the drive is longer. It misses the east entirely for half the year, when the east is at its best. It puts you at Sigiriya at ten in the morning with four coaches, when the same rock at six is almost empty.

We started this to plan the other version: the one that takes local knowledge and the willingness to drive further, and turns them into a trip that could not have been bought off a shelf.

How we work.

Four things that are true of every trip we run, and that we would rather say plainly than dress up.

  • 01 / 04

    Written, not assembled

Every itinerary starts empty. We do not have a catalogue of departures with your name dropped into one, and the shapes on the journeys page are starting points we expect to change.

  • 02 / 04

Local, and that is the whole point

We live here. The estate that will cook for you, the tracker who knows which waterhole, the man who opens the temple after hours: these are people we know, not suppliers we booked.

  • 03 / 04

    One person, start to finish

The designer who answers your first email is the one who writes the itinerary and the one on the phone if a flight moves. Nothing gets handed to an operations desk.

We will talk you out of things

If July is your only window and you had pictured the south coast, we will say so and move you east. Being agreeable about the wrong trip is not a service.

The conversation is free.

There is no deposit to plan and no obligation at the end of it. If what we come back with is not right, tell us and we will rewrite it, or tell us it is not for you and that is genuinely fine.
